Children And Chiropractic

Although most people relate to chiropractic for musculoskeletal pain, The Journal of Pediatrics found that chiropractic was very frequently used for kids, and the leading holistic care for children. The journal found that:
- 51% of the children who were brought to a chiropractor were seen for respiratory (asthma), ear, nose and throat problems
- 15% for muscular and joint problems
- 12% for digestive problems
- 6% for allergy complications

The study also found that the more education the parents received, the more likely they were to use chiropractic care for their children. Dissatisfaction with side-effects of medication and the belief that chiropractic was a healthier choice were among the reasons parents chose chiropractic care for their children. Subtle vertebral misalignments can interfere with the neurological pathways along the spine, reducing the body’s potential and setting the stage for sickness and dysfunction.
Research done by Harvard Medical’s Abraham Towbin M.D., a developmental neurologist, found that 90% of all infants sustain subluxation or neck dysfunction from the most routine birth. In addition, the infant’s spine grows 50% in length in the first year of life alone; at no other time in our existence will our growth be this accelerated. Chiropractic check-ups can correct the subluxation and dysfunction which can hinder proper development.
As the child learns to walk, bumps and blows can create challenges to certain vertebrae which are adapted to immediately by spinal wedging and distortion. These compensations are layered on throughout childhood, adolescence, and into adulthood. Many if not most of the structural imbalances chiropractors see in adults started early in childhood. Periodic chiropractic check-ups can allow the spine to develop in a more normal fashion.
